When I wrote the previous post and thought about ‘tags’ for it, I included the Spanish expression derechos de autor. For non-Spanish speakers, it’s possibly worth pointing out the ambiguity of that phrase.
Literally, it looks like “author’s rights”, but in fact it can translate as both “copyright” and “royalties”. This can be confusing, but probably makes some kind of sense. After all, in most cases it’s the copyright owner who is the beneficiary if there’s any payment when a work is published.
The French equivalent is droits d’auteur, I believe, and that always makes me think of droit du seigneur: presumably it’s linked in with the fact that if you sell your copyright, the buyer has the right to fuck with your work.
Anyway, it was interesting to see that in my own contract with Topka we use the English words “copyright” and “royalties” although most of the text is in Spanish. That way, it leaves no possibility of misunderstanding.
