local transport

One thing that never ceases to amaze me about Spain is how easy it is to find scenes of traditional village life.

I’m not talking about travelling to the more remote provinces such as León, where, according to today’s El Mundo, there are 23 municipalities with fewer than 200 registered residents.

Last weekend I visited Pedro Bernardo, an almost vertical village in the Gredos foothills, just 80 miles from Madrid and with a population of about 1200. As can be seen from the photo, there’s plenty of room to park your pony in the bull ring, and it doesn’t seem to matter much if you leave it taking up two spaces.

One horse town?

Even in the village where we live, which has six and a half thousand on the padrón, our neighbour goes back and forth to the village on his donkey.
