Well, no, that probably isn’t what the newspaper is saying, but it’s the way I read it. From today’s Público online:
Cambio de sexo gratuito en la Sanidad pública
Catalunya en 2005 ya había aprobado una ley que favorecía la adopción de parejas del mismo sexo. […].
And the phrase which has caught my attention is la adopción de parejas del mismo sexo, which appears to me to be talking about adopting same-sex couples.
I can just imagine my next visit home: “Hey, Mum, I know you’ve really always wanted grandchildren; well, meet César and Gino!”
Of course, now that there is no bar to what I thought of as la adopción por parejas del mismo sexo, if I did adopt them, Mum might yet end up with great-grandchildren which might be good enough.
I’ve always believed the use of prepositions is the key to identifying a real native speaker. And I guess this just reinforces the idea that I’ll never be mistaken for a native hispanohablante.
