London graffiti

Travelling in London this last week, it was a pleasant surprise to read the following sign:

Leake Street, SE1
Leake Street, SE1

The result of that freedom to draw, paint, spray etc., is a highly decorative tunnel:

  1. How nice to find someone else who appreciates graffiti.
I became a fan when I was visiting Girona last September and I’ve just got back from a weekend photographing street art in Bristol where the RWA has staged ‘Crimes of Passion’ a huge exhibition in which they allowed fifty or so Bristol graffiti artists to paint on the walls, floor and ceilings. It’s quite a vigorous exhibition and seems well-supported. I was also delighted to find that a younger friend, who I knew as a fellow photographer, is also one of Bristol’s better- known graffiti artists. Did we meet at Pamela Payne’s once?

    1. Hi Jenny,
I don’t think we’ve met, unless at a poetry meeting in London last March?
The Bristol exhibition sounds great. I love graffiti and murals – there are some brilliant trompe l’oeil murals in Madrid, as well as amazing ceramic tile decorations inside and outside buildings. A lot of the shops have paintings on their overnight shutters, too. Perhaps I should look out some of my old photos and post them.
Will your ‘Crimes of Passion’ photos be available online at all?
Thanks for taking the time to read/view and comment.
