surprised by scarlet

Perhaps size matters. Scale certainly does.

Without further information, is one of the flowers shown really any more spectacular than the other?

In fact the one on the left is a scarlet pimpernel, a flower so tiny and so reluctant to show itself except in full sunshine that it really does seem to warrant the description “elusive”.

After all the grass was cut this weekend, I caught a glimpse of scarlet under the ivy; the whole plant is hardly bigger than a single hibiscus bloom and I hadn’t noticed it before. It may technically be a weed, but I’m glad it avoided the reaper’s whirring cord as Sir Percy Blakeney avoided the guillotine.
