A strange story from the BBC today, with the headline Peru arrests ‘human fat killers’. According to the report,
Four people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing dozens of people in order to sell their fat and tissue for cosmetic uses in Europe.
I wonder what use the fat is put to. Particularly as, according to the Health First Europe website: “Europe has the highest number of overweight and obese people in the world.”

According to news on the BBC website, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition have issued a draft report saying that recommended daily calorie counts may have been wrong for the last 18 years.
I don’t know when we first started talking about calorie intake, but back when I was a child – long before the current figures were set – I’m pretty sure the daily allowances being discussed were far higher – around 5,000 for men and 3,500 for women. Since 1991, though, they’ve been down at 2,000 calories for women and 2,500 for men.

The village is celebrating its jornadas micológicas this weekend, which means that the local restaurants are offering all sorts of weird and wonderful fungal specialities. I don’t expect to be indulging, having had a bad reaction a couple of years ago.
Instead, I have been out observing the hongos on the lawn. Although the weather is beginning to be autumnal and the fog was so thick this morning that I thought we’d lost the orchard, we had more mushrooms last weekend, I think. Certainly more variety.

Nine years old and 81.5 kilos in weight. That’s nearly 13 stone for those of us who still think in “old money”, and it’s the weight reached by a child con obesidad mórbida in the north of Spain.
It seems the authorities have been aware of problems since 2004 and the parents haven’t been obeying the legal conditions that had been laid down. So, recently, a judge ordered the child to be ingresado en un centro de menores where diet and exercise routines would, presumably, be strictly adhered to.

I should probably start this post by saying that I know my grammar and punctuation aren’t perfect. However, I’m not usually writing about politically and emotionally delicate matters; and I’m not writing on an international news site which is read by millions worldwide.
It bothers me when I see phrases like this on the BBC website:
“I absolutely condemn sexual tourism [and] I condemn paedophilia in which I have never in any way participated, and all the people who accuse me of that type of thing should be ashamed,” Mr Mitterrand said.
