odd thoughts

So, this post is going to be a collection of fairly random thoughts and photos taken over the last week or so, and the challenge for me is whether I can link them together and make something coherent from them.

I might simply fall at the first hurdle, as I really don’t know what to say about the pretty little yellow flowers in the top picture. I think the plant is probably some kind of berberis, better known for its bright berries than for its blossom.

all manner of things

As so often is the case, when I started to think about what to write about in today’s blog post, I came up a complete blank. My mind was about as empty of ideas as the milk bottles on the doorstep in the top picture are of milk.

And now I have that image there, I shall pause on the threshold to contemplate the joys of the English language, which allows us to differentiate so clearly between a milk bottle and a bottle of milk. The distinction could be made, of course, by using prepositions – “a bottle for” rather than “a bottle of” – but I think the way we do it is better.

not floral at all

I said yesterday that most of the photos I take are of plants, especially flowers and seed heads, so today I was determined to post something that wasn’t floral.

And I’ve had the joy of spending most of the weekend copying the contents of a stack of old CDs onto an external hard drive, so I have a lot of photos to choose from. squaring up to the future

I’ve been writing this blog for a long time now – since some time back in 2007. And from the beginning I was determined that the content should all be original.

I’ve probably posted twice a week on average, and although I have quoted other people’s writing, I don’t think it’s ever really been the main heft of any blog post. As for photos, I’ve certainly used screen shots, but I can only think of a couple of pictures that I’ve taken from the web for purely illustrative purposes, which I don’t think is bad considering a quick check of the blog’s media library suggests I’ve used over two and a half thousand images.

looking back

If you write a blog on WordPress, they offer you insights into the number of visitors, where they come from and the like. They also send you little messages when you reach certain “achievements” or targets. Today, they have told me that it’s thirteen years since I registered on WordPress.

The odd thing, though, is that if you go back through the archives here, you’ll find that I published my first post – cerditos y patitos – on the 23rd of April, 2007, which is thirteen years and three months ago. Somehow, it seems I managed to write and publish five posts before I actually registered the blog. I suppose I must have cheated and backdated them so that if the first visitors enjoyed what they found they’d have something more to read.
